THE STORY:
Basically I forgot to pay my rent before the fifth, which would of course not reflect on how I would take care of you day in and day out. I had placed a check in my wallet Thursday night (next to my magnum ‘just in case’ condom) and never turned it in. The next morning I freaked out and started running to my landlord in my vibram shoes (which provided absolutely no protection when you ran over my foot). While rounding the corner of 25th & Ist at 9am, I was continuing my jog inside the crosswalk when it felt like I got hit by a truck. Now here is the part of any usual romance novel where ‘getting hit by a truck’ is likened to the feeling of love but you had decided to take it one step further by actually HITTING ME WITH YOUR SUV

Now of course it was not my intention to get hit, and I thought that I had made that abundantly clear by staying within the painted crosswalk lines but I guess that we can work on our communication skills while spending the rest of our lives together. It was actually a pretty impressive trick that you had pulled off, pinning my left foot underneath your tire causing the rest of my body to slam into your tire and side paneling (how’s that for an M. Night Shyamalan style twist?!) I know that I saw you first and had even expected you to stop at the stop sign but you instead disregarded the normal street laws even proceeded to perform a California Roll. I take that back. You hardly tapped your brakes so much that I’d have to declare your move a Hawaiian Roll, that’s how calm, relaxed and aloof you were.

So there we were, two star crossed lovers interacting for the first time. You in your protected metal bubble and me in my possibly too revealing shorts. Thankfully you thought enough of me to pull over even though you seemed just the type to break my heart, or a bone or two if given the chance. Cut to me screaming out the usual lines when seeing someone of the opposite sex like ‘I can’t believe you just hit me with your car’ or ‘SERIOUSLY, I STILL can’t believe you just hit me with your car!!’ You come out with the big guns, hitting me with tears that could match Japan’s tsunami which melted my heart like the polar ice caps. Needless to say, the juices were flowing. Then out of nowhere a grey haired man approached the scene; an old boyfriend perhaps? I never did find out. Either way, he stuck his head in to the conversation like Punxsutawney Phil diving back into his hole after seeing his own shadow. Look, I know that the references here are getting over the top like a Sylvester Stalone movie but reliving the moment of when you HIT ME WITH YOUR SUV kind of has me on the edge of my seat all over again.

I was talking to you about children and our future ..like what if instead of HITTING ME WITH YOUR SUV, you had instead hit a small tyke riding his bike? You were sobbing and saying that you stopped, which I immediately shot down like a helicopter in Libya. I tried to be the type of man to command respect by saying something along the lines of ‘Stay right here, I need to do some man shit’ in the best Old Spice guy character I could manage. In reality I was just trying to drop off that late rent check half a block away to keep a house over my head so that I could provide for you and ours down the road. Instead you made like a tree and got outta there (by the way, I really like Back to the Future and hope you do too). I don’t know, maybe you had other plans with that ex boyfriend of yours. Ultimately you just reminded me that life can be like a teenage boy’s dick and get hard sometimes for no reason.

So we parted ways and I never got your name, number, insurance information, license plate or any other way of contacting you again. Thankfully I have a very sharp pain in my knee to remind me of our short time together which works out great while serving food at the popular restaurant that I work at (I can cook too!! Would have told you but we didn’t exactly get to that part of the conversation). I’m actually assuming that you have children yourself. Maybe from that previous relationship? Maybe you’re actually still married! With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I’m hoping that you actually come in to my restaurant so that we can reconnect. I won’t so much spit in your food as update the police report I had filed shortly after realizing that the possible love of my life had left.

Years ago ~ I was in a bar in Laguna Beach when a fair-skinned girl in her twenties walked in and started going table to table trying to sell her very childlike crayon drawings.

Five bucks a piece.

I’m ashamed to say that I had a laugh ~ I made fun of her and her drawings. The bartender was kind enough to set me straight.

This girl, Jane, was in a horrible car accident and suffered brain damage. She didn’t want to be a burden to her parents or the state. So, she decided to make her own way in the world.

Selling these drawings was how she supported herself.

I was taken aback.

I was moved.

I was ashamed.

I mean, whatever problems I thought I had were nothing compared to Jane’s. She had brain damage and still didn’t fold ~ she figured out a way to keep moving.

This should be a lesson for anyone that thinks they have it tough or can’t see a way to make ends meet.

I think of Jane every now and again. Even though, it’s been well over a decade since I’ve seen her ~ she had a profound impact on me.

A lasting profound impact.

I’ve shared Lefty Jane’s drawings and story many times over the years. It wasn’t until five years in that I realized her name was really Jane Letty. She signs her drawings LETTY JANE.

I thought the T was an F.

Anyway, I will be keeping Jane’s drawings as one of my 100 things. It will serve as a poignant reminder when things get rough or if I think I can’t take my boss anymore ~ to just take a deep breath and remember that if Jane can make it, so can I.

There is always a way.

Always.

I purchased several drawings from Jane that day. My favorite is still the one of Jesus with the wetsuits.

I wonder how Jane is doing today. Is she still daring to move? I like to think so. I really do. Because, if she can ~ for fuck’s sake, so can I.

So, if you are ever in Laguna Beach and have the pleasure of meeting Jane ~ please, take the time to show her the kindness of strangers.

And, even if you never have the chance to meet her ~ you can still think of her whenever life seems like a little too much to bear. And, you can dare yourself to move just like Jane did ~ because if she can do it with all the cards stacked against her ~ you sure the hell have no excuse not to do the same.

The gift that Jane gave me ~ the important life lesson I learned from her was that every obstacle is an opportunity ~ an opportunity that you just haven’t recognized yet. And, the secret to overcoming every obstacle is in knowing that if you keep moving toward it instead of away, the opportunity will come into focus.

And, when it does ~ you will have the wherewithal to take full advantage of it. Since you didn’t expend all of your energy focusing on the door that just closed ~ you will have the strength to walk through the door that just opened.

That’s the thing about opportunities and challenges ~ nothing happens until you show up.

Thank you ~ Jane Letty ~ for teaching me this.

The Silent Treatment - A Form of Abuse

I believe the silent treatment (feigned apathy; cold-shoulder; silence; distance, and ignoring you) is the worst form of emotional abuse. It is a punishment used by abusers to make you feel unimportant, not valued, not cared about and completely absent from the abuser's thoughts. It is used as a form of non-physical punishment and control because the abuser mistakenly thinks that if they don't physically harm you then they are not abusers. The truth is, they are far worse at doling out abuse than the physical abuser.

Silent treatment is a form of banishing someone from the abuser's existence without the benefit of closure or a good bye or a chance at reconciliation. In a word..it's meant to torture someone you profess to love. Should I meet someone again who uses this tactic just once he will not get another chance. Because the silent treatment is something that the abuser repeats over and over again. The silent treatment is CONTROL, and a safe means for them to avoid any 'uncomfortable' topics, issues in the relationship, or issues within himself (or herself).

The silent treatment is a method the abuser uses to 'kill' you for something you have done. In a sense, you have been psychologically 'murdered' by them, but your physical life goes on.

In my current relationship (over as of this last abusive episode) I have spent more days getting the 'silent treatment' than not. Yes - I believe it is the 'worst' of the emotional abuse tactics - and this is where I have been most harmed and damaged, and where I will need most of my healing from. At my age I definitely don't need this. Relationships aren't supposed to be about pain and hurt. Why in goodness name I have allowed myself to suffer through all his forms of power, control, and abuse for years will be a forever question mark in my mind.

I used to love him, even when I was angry with him, or hurt by him. My love stopped during the last episode - or maybe the one before. I really can't remember when my heart shut off the love valve. Maybe it was a gradual thing. However, the love is gone, truly gone - and this current episode just made me commit to not going back into the relationship. Truth be told, if I were to walk in on him today and find he had died from a heart attack or something, I think I would just be relieved, and not experience any grief or sadness at all. I know that sounds inhuman and evil, but what abused partner hasn't wished for the abuser to just stop abusing, even if it's by death?

As with most abusers, they are in denial over their own abuse. They may use the excuses:

I needed to have some space
I thought you needed some space
I was feeling depressed and didn't want to drag you down with me
I thought we both need a cooling off period
I felt threatened/insulted/hurt and reacted with fear and isolation
I just needed some time alone to think
I didn't want to fight
You told me to leave you alone
Problems from my past came up and I needed to sort them out
Of course these excuses are just one more way for the abusers to blame somebody or something else for his abuse.

Some victims of the Silent Treatment have said:

"He uses it to punish me on a regular basis"

"I've had times where my husband used this tactic on me so bad, that I ended up wishing that he would just hit me and get it over with-why? Because at least then I would know I existed, and that I wasn't a ghost or invisible."

"I've learned to love the silent treatment. For years, it devastated me and I felt that it was the worst of the abuse...but it's not...at least not for me. ...and yes, I felt that it was a punishment. It made me feel not important, subhuman...like I didn't even exist."

"That's all it took & he wouldn't speak for days sometimes. Then he would start talking like nothing was ever wrong. Ignore your problems & keep up a front. I couldn't live like that anymore."

"There was no rhyme or reason, it could happen at any time, go on for days and usually erupted into an outburst of rage. Trying to figure it out, was mind boggling and yes, punishment!"

The reality is (in most cases) that the more someone ignores you the more you actually want to resolve the problem. It's almost an involuntary need on the part of the person being ignored. And that's the whole point to the ignorer. It puts them in control AND it gets them attention. However, that's in most cases - in my case the more he pulled the silent treatment, the more I saw him as a very emotionally-sick and an immature, abusive person and the LESS I wanted to resolve our problems. I would just pray for him to leave, or sometimes I would fantasize that I was in another healthy, loving relationship, and that he and I didn't even exist as a couple, or I would pack up some clothes and try to leave myself. Of course, part of his 'control' was in knowing the fact that I couldn't leave my children or my job...which I would have had to do to leave my home. This gave him all the authority and power over me as he so chose.

But that authority and control truly isn't love - that controlling power and abuse is an insecure person's way of trying to not be abandoned - by abandoning you, and probably when you needed them the most. This way they feel that they had a psychological and emotional hold on you. That you can't abandon them. The problem is, are they too stupid to realize that being abandoned is exactly the result that they will eventually get? To be abandoned by their victim? Maybe not always physically abandoned, as abused people can take abuse for years and years. But they abandon their abusers mentally and emotionally, closing their hearts and souls to them, and killing any love at all they may have once felt for the abuser.

Isn't that leaving? I should think so!

Abuse is abuse. And abuse is never ok. In one way though, the silent treatment is far worse than other forms of abuse, because it indirectly says to you that you are not a person, you are an object, you are invisible because they choose to make you so because you are not worthy of their time. THAT is one of the most hurtful and abusive things to do in my book. It is a horrible feeling, being ignored and denied affection.

For me personally the silent treatment was dished out when I did something he didn't like, when I was wrong, or when I showed him he was wrong. The link was as clear as flipping a switch and seeing the light go out. POW, KABOOM! I got punished and he wouldn't speak with me for days on end, including choosing to not even be in the same physical area with me. He would hide away or disappear for hours, and even sleep sitting upright in a desk chair every night for up to a week (or more) just to avoid being in the same room with me. He was almost childlike in his behavior. I finally said, "screw this". I couldn't live like that anymore.

I have always complained about the high cost of living in the Bay area, but its even harder for someone making $15 an hour, well my friend with benefits decided it was not worth it and left for Texas. Things were good between us- We used to meet once a week, and were just getting into the relationship groove.

Think about it- how many people find a LTR and marriage? I think the lifetime perecentage is about 10% if you are closer 40, so percentage of men/women who begin a LTR in the next 12 months is going to be about 1% at best. So the search for LTR, boyfriend or husband is something that is a long process, possibly taking 5-7 years.

THREE ALTERNATIVES

So you have 3 alternatives in the conventional approach-

you could look for that elusive LTR, soulmate, husband etc.

OR you could have casual sex with strangers

OR you could suffer involuntary celibacy(what people used to call not getting laid..:) )

What is the fourth alternative? The fourth alternative is to have a friend with whom you can have regular sex, while you continue your search for that elusive soulmate. You start seeing person A, after 2 dates he does not call, or you do not like him. You move on to person B, same story. Person C, you meet what looks like a man of your dreams, things are going well. So there I was, walking along the sidewalk in front of the lawn. You looked at me and said "Right on man, whas up!". I quickly scan your face to see if I know you, but no, I don't. I figure it must have been the Pink Floyd shirt I was wearing. I can't imagine why a 20-something retro-grunge flannel-clad sort would be chatting with a middle-aged, bald, fat guy. It had to be the Floyd shirt.

I like to be polite, so I shake your hand with an earnest and heartfelt "How you doing bro!".

Sure enough, you bring up the impending Roger Waters show, so I know it is all about the Floyd. I'm cool with that. They are a great band, and I could talk about them at length. But then you bring up the 'shrooms. You wanted $40 for a quarter, or $20 for an eighth, but you assure me that I really only need an eighth for a good trip. Your friend is holding just up by the back wall, and if I give you the $20 you would be happy to just run up and grab a bag for me.

Now I'm not exactly Nancy Reagan. Back in the day I was even known to partake a bit here or there. But get real dude -- wearing a Pink Floyd shirt does not make me part of your target demographic. If you want to sell to 40-somethings that still partake, try the local homeless shelter (Atlanta has lots of them). You need to be marketing to the 20-somethings that were all over the lawn, you know, the ones that were still in dippers when I saw Waters and Gilmore reunite at their epic Division Bell show at Georgia Tech, circa 1994. Those folks are your target demographic. You need to figure out how to reach out and embrace them, capture their attention and then explain why your product is better than the product of the guy with the mohawk five feet away from you.

But enough about marketing, it can only fix so much. No matter what all the silicon filled beautiful people (collectively known as "Marketing Departments") like to claim, no amount of advertising or market segmentation and targeting can fix a bad product. And lets be real, for any show at Lakewood Amphitheater, 'shrooms are just a plain bad product.

Don't get me wrong. I love 'shrooms. In the right place, 'shrooms are a wonderful product. But 'shrooms have a small, but serious side-effect that makes them completely unacceptable for any locating that lacks access to a toilet. It doesn't have to be a perfect toilet. Not even a very clean toilet once the drugs start to take hold. But it does have to be a toilet. Lets face it, 95% of the time, the first sign of the 'shrooms coming on is the desperate urge to evacuate ones bowels.

You have a fundamental mismatch between your product ('shrooms) and your audience (the attendees at Lakewood).

At Aaron's Lakewood Amphitheater you have exactly two toilets for each gender. In the male toilet the urine is about two inches deep and the long line of wait-ees is busily finding sinks, trashcans, etc to supplement the 12 proper toilets, 3 urinals and 1 giant roman trough that are actually available. This is all complicated by the fact that every 15 minutes the massive group of frustrated females will break with their own line and "invade" the mens room with intent to take over any possible plumbing aperture for their own use.

The long and the short of this is, nobody -- I MEAN NOBODY -- wants to try and actually take a dump at Lakewood. This is at odds with your core product, which is very likely to produce some very interestingly shaped and colored fecal objects. While these fecal objects might be interesting to watch in the privacy of a nice toilet, they are no fun when six men are asking if they can pee between your legs, there is no toilet paper is available, and 30 feminists are screaming "are you done yet?!?".

Face it. 'Shrooms are the wrong product for Lakewood. Next time, bring blotter.

I know the feeling. You have to take it one step at a time. As you know there is alot to deal with in a divorce but if half the world can do it then you can. Instead of dwelling on all of it at once you need to start with the most important things and work down from there. One thing at a time.

First, get yourself a place or remain where you are and get a roommate to split the mortgage if any. Now you have a place for your children so make sure its safe. Now you shouldn't be missing your children, is this by choice or is the other parent not allowing this? You cannot distance yourself from them no matter what.

If it means seeing your ex daily do it because you're going to have to eventually. If she doesn't allow it you can easily get a temp order for child visitation. They courts also allow the non custodial parent to watch the children in place of day care. If one parent insists on the child being in daycare then the courts force that parent to pay for it alone. Seeing your kids one on one will make you much happier. If you haven't done so try it. As long as you are happy they will be happy.
Half of your pain may be due to not seeing them.

Next..you want to try and be on friendly terms with your soon to be ex. Fighting will not help matters. If you want a cheap divorce do not fight. Lawyers are a waste of money especially when everything is standard. Start paying child support now as it makes you look better in court if you pay without a court order. The courts only care about normalcy for the child and what the children were used to before the separation. If you did most of the caring during the day then that is what the courts will want to continue. There are child support calculators on line. Courts could care less about who cheated on who and who gets the dishes. It's all about the kids. If you did most of the child rearing then you could easily get 50-50 custody and child support will be greatly reduced. This is probably where a court battle could begin? Hopefully not.

I find that the wifes lawyer usually pushes the wife to obtain a restraining order for one reason or another. This happens all the time.

If you feel there will be any problem when you're in contact with her bring someone along or meet at a police station. To save money do not just hire an attorney to do everything. Like I said most is pretty standard and the forms which they charge you a few hundred dollars you can easily complete yourself. They will even charge you for several phone calls. You file all the motions in court, do all the legwork and then hire an attorney to look over the final divorce decree/agreement. You can also hire an attorney on limited representation which only means you do most of the work and if it gets tough you pay her to go in and speak on your behalf. Just pay as you need her.

They will also take into consideration all of your bills and if your ex works. If it's a long term marriage which in TX is 10 years ...you may have to pay alimony if you are a man and the only one who works in the home. Its more complicated the longer the marriage, this is when your pension etc is involved. So now you have a place, you have to see your kids and should be or that's not going to look good, and do most of the legwork for court unless desperately needed. It's really not hard...

Once you get all the above in order the rest will be easy. Just try not worrying about everything at the same time. This is why I say take it one step at a time. Write a list and follow it. You can also defer your school loans for a few months for now. You will still be able to finish school but it may also be delayed. If it's something you really want to do then you can. Don't say you can't.

It may also help you to recruit a friend to help you with these little things while you take care of the bigger issues. They can call your school loan people and work on that and obtaining court paperwork for you...anything. Im sure you have plenty of people who would like to help you. If you have a car loan the auto lender defers loans up to 2-3 months per year.

Once you're a bit more organized and have taken care of the first few things everything will work itself out. It's a bit overwhelming at first but just think of all the people who survive it and are happier. I believe your children will help the most. You need to see them and they need to see you.

You will need sleep and you will need to eat properly. If you are overtired and not getting proper nutrition this will effect you negatively as well. You may not think it will, but it does. Exercise helps as well.

Any type of relationships should be put on hold until you straighten the above out, but you should discuss with them.

Now, I do not believe being here and typing about it will help you. You need to get away from the pc in the morning and get your ass in gear. Motivate yourself, you're not weak. Do not second guess yourself.

When you talk to your children you tell them the truth and also tell them they can see the other parent whenever they want to. If you have older children they will understand that daddy or mommy wants to be happy and they want to see you happy. Eventually when they do see this it will make them happy, but do not stay away from them. Any older ones let them help you decorate your place and let them decide how maybe one room should be done. They will have fun.

I'm sure you can still do school now as well , so get started on that process in the am and get off the pc. Don't forget to ask people to help you ;)
Oh and always document everything...dates and times it will come in handy.

I was waiting to order right as things were getting crazy. It was obvious that it would be a long wait. What can I say? I can’t compete with all the douches yelling for jager bombs. It was then that you appeared. A cute, petite, slightly hipster-ish girl standing next to me, waiting to order as well. The conversation began in the typical manner, simply relating on how frustrating it is when you spend half a night out just waiting for a drink. It then evolved into a true conversation. I spent the next twenty minutes finding out you have great taste in music, movies and literature. You laughed at my jokes, and that’s a big deal to average-looking guys like me.
Unfortunately, after we’d both finished our respective drinks, but were still immersed in discussion, you dropped a bomb that sent shrapnel into my heart.

“So are you gonna buy me a drink or what?”

I had been dreading this moment. I’ve learned from hard experience that any prolonged conversation with a girl at a club or a bar inevitably requires a fee of rum and coke, vodka tonic, or God forbid, a cosmo. As cute as you were, I felt obligated to retain my self-respect.

“Sorry, I don’t buy girls drinks. Just kind of my policy.”

You looked at me like I told you I was going to rape your dog Charlie (yes, I remember his name). Your face morphed from a beautiful smile into a twisted caricature of shock, revulsion, and utter disbelief.

“Seriously, you’re not gonna buy me a drink? What’s your problem?”

Well sweetheart, let me explain to you in detail my logic regarding this decision that you found so unbelievable:

1. I’ve been going to bars for a couple of years now. I enjoy meeting people when I do. I enjoy meeting attractive girls like yourself. I have, however, learned that buying girls drinks is a sucker’s game. Yes, it has developed into sharing my bed for the night a couple times, but 90% of the time, all it does is give me a higher bar tab. Now you might say I’m a prick for expecting a girl to sleep with me just because I buy her a drink. I agree an $8 cocktail does not and should not equal a sexual encounter. However, I believe spending time and money on a girl when I could be having a good night out with my friends does entitle me at least one of the following things: You reciprocating by buying me a drink, you giving me your phone number and/or going out on a date with me, where once again I will be spending time and money on you. Notice that sex is not a requirement or expectation that is coupled with any of these options. Now, of course, if I had offered to buy you a drink, and you accepted, you are not obligated to any of these things. The big distinction here is that you asked me to buy you a drink, and were shocked that I wouldn’t do so. This brings me to my second point.

2. You know exactly what you’re doing. You’re an attractive girl, and when you go out there is no shortage of guys offering to buy you drinks. You know that they are all doing so with the hope that it will lead to sex with you. You know that it’s not going to happen, but you will accept the free drinks anyway. I don’t hold this against you. If they’re dumb enough to think that buying you a drink is the key to your heart and that they are somehow different from the other Ed Hardy-wearing frat-bros then it’s their own damn fault. You’re using your god-given assets to get free alcohol, nothing wrong with that. But it is precisely because I know that you do this that I will not be another douche who thinks he can get into your pants with a mixed drink. It’s insulting to my dignity as a man and your honor as a woman. I noticed you when you first walked in. I saw you dancing with that hopeless collar-popper. I saw him go to the bar and bring a drink back to you on the dancefloor. I saw how the second the glass was in your hand, you gave him the “Thanks for the drink, it was really nice meeting you” treatment complete with the obligatory pat on the chest. I saw the pathetic, defeated look on his face as you walked away. He will enter the next round of bar hopping a little wiser I hope.

3. You took my unwillingness to fall into such a trap as an insult. You accused me of being stuck-up. You then said that I had a chance at fucking you, but that I’d ruined it by being an asshole. What exactly are you trying to tell me? That the asinine idea that getting a girl a drink will get you in her pants is actually true? That your decision of whether or not to sleep with a guy is based on him liquoring you up? We had a good conversation, and maybe you were actually interested in me. But the fact that any rapport we built was destroyed when I wouldn’t buy you a gin and tonic means that I am no longer interested in you. Not all guys are desperate sperm donors. Some of us actually value a good conversation, and we value girls who have enough respect for themselves that they don’t view sex as a transaction.

4. We established during our conversation that we are both broke-ass fine arts students. Why then would you expect that I, someone who shares your financial woes, would want to spend money on you, a girl I just met? I don’t believe that chivalry is dead. I’ll hold a door for you, I’ll pull out your chair or take your coat. I’ll help you change a flat tire, carry you over deep puddles, figure out the remote, reset your modem. I’ll even help you move when I know you a little better. Why? Because I’m a gentleman. I will not, however, buy you a drink under the pretense that it is what a gentleman does, because I simply cannot afford it. If you want a guy who can afford to buy you whatever you want, find a fifty year-old sugar daddy. There was no shortage of potentials at the bar the other night.

I hope this illustrated my thought-process clearly enough. I hope you realize that you seemed amazing at first, and that declining to buy you a drink was in no way an insult. Your reaction, however, revealed the self-entitled, game-playing she-devil that was lurking underneath. I thank god for the out that he provided at that moment though. Just after you finished your little rant on what I dick I was for not boozing you up, a group of girls emerged at the bar right behind you. Two of these girls were thin and pretty. They immediately got the attention of some bros and had free drinks within minutes. The third girl was overweight and out of place. She had clearly spent a great deal of time and effort on her appearance, but alas, she was once again forsaken by her prettier friends and left to stand by herself, looking miserable. Luckily, I know when the universe has given me a profound gift. There were two incredible moments that filled me with an elation that could not be rivaled by the orgasm I would have had while fucking you. The first was the sincere, excited smile that the chubby girl gave me when I moved past you and asked what she wanted to drink. The second was turning back and seeing the look of horror on your face. You pathetic “have fun with the fatty” remark as you walked away was priceless. I may be broke, but I was willing to go into the red to make this girl’s night and to piss you off. I’m sure as soon as you left you got plenty of free drinks and plenty of idiots drooling over you. I just hope that I got under your skin enough to prevent any enjoyment of those things.

I had a great night. I introduced the big girl to an open-minded friend, and as I write this they are across the hall having loud sex. Normally going to bed alone, subjected to the sounds of raucous lovemaking across the hall would be a serious downer. But tonight, as I crawl into my lonely bed, I will go to sleep comforted by the fact that I have retained my self-respect. Having encountered more than a few spoiled bimbos, I infer that sex with you would have consisted of you lying on your back expecting me to be so grateful that I’m seeing your “hot” naked bod makes up for the fact that you are putting absolutely no effort into this sexual experience. This may just be me trying to justify going to bed alone tonight, but hey, what can you do?

The moral: Ladies, accept drinks if they are offered. Do not expect them. And if you’re feeling particularly wild on a given night, offer to buy the guy a drink. He will be instantly smitten.

You we’re all I wanted and I knew (and still know) the difference between “wanting” and “needing”. I always wanted you. And I always knew that wanting you and being with you were connected in about zero ways.

I know you’ve been trained, horribly, in how not to empathize. But if you can take just a moment and think about how happy I must have been sitting on that couch with you, touching you, for a long time, and looking at your body...can you please take a moment and imagine how that must of felt for me? After a lot more than a decade of wanting all of you, I was finally with you in a very intimate way and in a way that I thought you wouldn’t allow because of...well...because of a lot evil that this world thought you should shoulder. But you let me keep going, and I did, and I loved every tenth of a second of it. You watched me, and you saw how I felt - I know you did. I was loving loving you, and enjoying one of the most beautiful things I’d ever felt and seen at the same time. I had always thought of sex as being the end-all-be-all but...as nice as that was with you...it wasn’t as great as the other stuff. I’ve never felt like that before so it just makes what little we had even more special to me.

Months before we had anything to do with each other physically, you got really messed up and showed me your belly. You grabbed my hand and had me feel the stretch marks. There was absolutely nothing sexual about it. But I loved it. Did I love the stretch marks? Well...no...but...yes, I did. It’s a part of you and, from what I know, it was nothing near the worst part. So it was like you letting me in. Letting me in to all of you. All I ever wanted. Even the damned stretch marks.

You have certain words and phrases that immediately turn you off or turn you defensive. One of those phrases is “You need...”. Oh, god help the poor sap who tells you what you need. Luckily, god has never once had anything to do with my life so I’m going to break something down for you: you need to be loved for every second of every day for a loooooong time, and that love needs to be real or else you’ll immediately know it isn’t. You need someone who you can show your deepest darkest stretch marks to and then have that someone feel even closer to you because of it. And you need a break. You need a break with absolutely no strings attached to it, and no time limit.

Unfortunately, you’ve got a little friend you keep around that only sees love as power. A little friend that tries to turn everything into some kind of game that needs to be played. A friend who turns all men into Johns. Because she’s a whore. A literal whore. She’s a junkie. She stalks my websites and doesn’t say anything. She says she still loves one of her babies daddies’ when there’s no reason for it besides money to get her another fix. She’s a user - that’s the best word that sums up all of her ways: user. “Oh, you love me? That’ll cost you,” and “Oh, you had a baby with me? That’ll cost you.” And all proceeds go to her drug fund. Which gets spent in a weekend and the cycle continues. While the kids watch.

I miss you so much, Melissa, but you won’t talk to me. Mo, on the other hand, has been harassing me and I’m going to stop that. Let me tell you about a Wolf story that my friend Brook told me:

A Cherokee Indian chief sits down with his grandson to talk about life. He tells his grandson that there’s a fight going on inside him between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. Naturally, the grandson asks, “Which one is winning?” To which the chief replies, “The one I feed”.

I know I loved Melissa in the only true way a person can love (mixed with some messed up human emotional stuff, of course, but...essentially, I HAVE truly loved someone). So I’ve got one wolf who is perfectly healthy and in good fighting condition. But then Mo keeps feeding the other wolf and that other wolf is getting fat and needs some exercise. He needs a park to run around in for a day so he can get tired and relent to the other wolf. But Mo keeps feeding the bad wolf. I don’t get a choice of who I get to feed: Mo is the only other person whom, for whatever reason, has permission to feed the nasty wolf inside me. You know me - how long will I let her do that? How likely am I to leave her in a condition that allows her to ever feed that wolf again?

I just want Melissa to be back, and to be loved for real. I know I’m the guy for that but...it doesn’t matter...if Melissa can have what I want for her with someone else then that’s great. That’s the kind of love I have for her. That’s what one of the wolves inside me is like. It makes me cringe when a guy is talking about his girlfriend/wife/lover/whatever and says, “She’s mine.” How does someone own another person? It’s impossible. But I “get it” now, because Melissa IS mine. She can feel more love for another person, be loved more by another person, or never love at all. It doesn’t matter because, only to me, Melissa was mine. She’s for me. She’s what I can be comfortable and truly happy with for the rest of my life. She, like any other human being, belongs to no one...but she’s mine.

I want Melissa for the rest of my life. But it’s that damn Mo who always takes over. When the anger goes away she’ll have a lot of questions about the losses I’ve delivered to her, and the pain that’s been inflicted on her. I want Mo to know right now that all of what is about to happen is because of what she stood in the way of: true love. When Mo is screaming, “Whyyyyy?!?! Oh, god, please, whyyyyyy?!?!” I want her to be able to answer her own question: she messed with true love. I’m going to sleep just fine at night thinking about Melissa and me on that couch but Mo is going to be up wondering who’s headlights just pulled into the parking lot.

I’m sorry I’m mentioning Mo so much, Melissa, but she is a huge part of your life. The worst part. She was probably there on the couch too but I choose not to think about that. I’d rather think about loving loving you. You were never allowed to understand what it means when someone says they were just loving the chance to love you but...I was, and I did. I want to do that again tonight, and tomorrow, ad infinitum. There is nothing on your body that feels ugly to me. There is nothing about your body that looks ugly to me. Everything about you is another piece that I have longed to know about since the first time I fell in love with you. Every moment I spent with you was me trying to convince you that everything about you is something I want to know about and will love, no matter what. Everything about you except Mo. Mo is about to come back in full force, or about to be afraid to ever come back. Either way, unless you change, it’s going to come down to the Wolf story my friend Brook told me.

You have become a dear friend to me. I thank you for this. But i can't get you out of my head, i awake and fall asleep thinking of you. I get all twisted inside in your name. This isn't me, i don't get caught up like this. Never in my life have i ever felt like this, ever. To tell you the truth, it scares me. You have me cornered and aren't even chasing me. Such a shame. I am hoping that you received this today, your 50th birthday.
The garden is beautiful and the wind chimes are blowing gracefully.
I wonder if you have had a happy life. We haven't talked for weeks, since our last trip on June 12th 2010. It was yesterday to me, but a lifetime ago for you. This is so hard to write, as I am still so in love with you. I miss you, this house haunts me, our bed, I can't sleep at night. I tried changing the furniture, I can't escape your presence. So much harder this time.

My wish has always been for your health and happiness, I thought if you could just stop the pot and Sierra Nevada we would have a chance to make this work.
I have come to realize that it had nothing to do with the drugs. It was our differences.
Your age, my age. You knew we made a mistake when you married me, but you kept your commitment for as long as you could. Deep down you knew, as did I that you would need and want something more. I tried to tell you, tried to get you to understand but you were not ready to move on. Now that you are ready and I need to tell you something.

I have always wished and prayed that you would be blessed with a happy healthy marriage, beautiful children, and a successful business. A life filled with happiness.

I am not sure what the next 25 years will bring for me, but I want to appreciate every laugh, hug and kiss that I am given. Looking back I see how hard you tried and I am so thankful for your love.

So, now that you are 50 you might understand that life is short, make the most of each day, love deeply, care softly, speak with consideration, appreciate everything and everyone.
And know that I will always love you, with fond memories of our past.

Take this now into your future and live, love and be loved, for there is nothing greater than the sorrow of what could of been.
